Florida Man Denied Social Security Benefits After Paying in For a Lifetime

Florida retirement

Jimmy Klass received quite a surprise as he prepared for retirement at the age of 66. The Florida resident was approved for and then subsequently denied Social Security retirement benefits.

Klass had been working steadily for decades, paying taxes, and contributing to society, but one important detail emerged when it was time to claim retirement benefits from the system he had paid into for years.

Klass’ mother was Canadian and his father was American. He was raised in New York where he held a union job. He was approved to serve in the military and the New Jersey State Police.

All of this and, as it turned out, he was not technically a U.S. Citizen. Jimmy had always believed that he was a citizen because it was the life he had always known and no one questioned it when he worked, got a driver’s license, and voted.

Apparently, when he applied for Social Security benefits, the government decided it was time to ask questions. Initially, he was told that he would be receiving his first check, but instead got a letter saying that he hadn’t proven that he was here legally.”

Can you imagine working for decades and expecting a social security check only to be told you don’t qualify? Read more about this unusual story here.

We encourage Congress to pass a bill we call the Elder Relief Act. This proposed legislation would be a game changer for many American retirees. See what we’re talking about here.
