Retirement benefits are simply not enough for most older Americans to live on. Social Security benefits are far too low, and the cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) does not go far enough to combat the high cost of living and the realities of inflation. Proposed legislation, however, could be a game-changer.
The Elder Relief Act is a crucial bill sitting in Congress with the aim of improving the lives of older Americans by increasing Social Security benefits. This legislation would give seniors an $85 per month increase in retirement benefits, along with a 4 percent annual increase every year after.
However, despite what this bill would do for seniors, Congress has yet to take action and pass the bill. It is unacceptable that these great older Americans are struggling to afford their needs in retirement. Something has to change.
We believe that it is essential for our society to prioritize the well-being and dignity of our senior citizens.
