Retirement Should Be Rewarding—But It Comes With Real Challenges

We often picture retirement as a time of relaxation, travel, and enjoying the rewards of a lifetime of work. But the reality is, the transition from a career to retirement isn’t always smooth. For many, it brings a new set of challenges—some expected, others not.

One of the biggest concerns? Financial security. It’s no secret that many retirees worry about whether their savings, pensions, and Social Security benefits will be enough to support them through the years ahead. The fear of outliving one’s savings is real, and it can add a layer of stress during what should be a peaceful chapter of life.

But finances aren’t the only challenge. Finding a new sense of purpose can be just as difficult. After decades of structure, goals, and identity tied to a job, many retirees struggle to adjust. Sure, hobbies, volunteering, or part-time work can help fill the gap—but discovering what brings joy and fulfillment in this next stage takes time and reflection.

Health issues also come into sharper focus. With age, medical needs become more complex, and navigating healthcare and insurance systems can be overwhelming. Staying active and living a healthy lifestyle is more important than ever, but that requires not only motivation, but also access to resources and support.

And let’s not forget about social connection. Leaving the workplace often means losing a built-in network of colleagues and daily interactions. Without effort, loneliness can creep in. Cultivating new friendships and staying engaged in the community are essential to emotional well-being.

The good news? With thoughtful planning, a flexible mindset, and the right support systems, retirement can still be deeply fulfilling.

But we also believe systemic changes are needed, especially when it comes to making retirement more affordable.

That’s why we’re advocating for the Elder Relief Act—a proposed piece of legislation that would increase Social Security benefits and help ease the financial pressure so many seniors face. It’s a critical step toward making retirement not just possible, but sustainable.

We urge Congress to act. And we invite you to learn more about how we’re working to support older Americans in building the retirement they deserve. See what we’re working on here.
