Veterans Day

Is Veterans Day Being Phased Out and Replaced With a New Holiday?

President Trump has indicated that there may be big changes coming to U.S. holidays. While these are not additional federal holidays (no extra days off), they are adjustments to the way we have celebrated for years.

In a recent social media post, the President declared his intention to celebrate victory in World War One and World War Two on November 11th and May 8th, respectively.

As you are likely aware, November 11th is already Veterans Day. This change would mean that the holiday would become a celebration of U.S. victory in WWI rather than honoring all who have served our country in uniform.

While this may sound odd, it’s also worth noting that it would actually be a return to form for the holiday. Looking at the history of Veterans Day, it was originally Armistice Day, a celebration of The Great War’s end at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month — November 11th, 1918.

Is it a step in the right direction to recognizing Armistice Day again, or is it a step toward excluding other veterans? Let us know what you think in the comments.
