The Urgent Need for The Elder Relief Act

After decades of contributing to the workforce, retirement should offer stability, comfort, and peace of mind. Instead, for many Americans age 82 and older, these years are increasingly defined by financial strain and constant worry.

The proposed Elder Relief Act, now awaiting action in Congress, aims to address this growing crisis. If approved, the bill would increase Social Security benefits by $85 per month—an adjustment that could help seniors better manage everyday necessities such as groceries, utilities, and housing.

The legislation also includes a 4 percent annual increase designed to help benefits keep pace with inflation and the rising cost of living, which has hit older Americans especially hard.

The need for this relief is urgent. Healthcare expenses continue to climb, and Medicare premiums consume a larger share of already-limited incomes. Many seniors are forced into heartbreaking trade-offs: choosing between filling prescriptions or paying rent, buying food or covering medical bills.

For those living on fixed incomes, inflation has only deepened the struggle. As prices rise, Social Security checks simply don’t stretch far enough to meet basic needs.

The Elder Relief Act represents an important step toward restoring balance. By strengthening Social Security and tying increases to inflation, the bill would give seniors greater financial security and help ensure access to healthcare and other essentials without constant sacrifice.

This issue goes beyond dollars and cents. It is about honoring the dignity of older Americans who have spent a lifetime working, paying taxes, and contributing to their communities. Congress has an opportunity—and a responsibility—to act.

Passing the Elder Relief Act would send a clear message that seniors matter and that retirement should be a time of security, not uncertainty. Lawmakers must seize this moment to stand up for millions of older Americans who deserve the stability they have earned.
