For older Americans living on fixed incomes, every trip to the gas pump can feel like another financial setback. Gasoline is currently averaging about $4.10 per gallon nationwide, according to AAA, roughly $1 more than it was a year ago.
For seniors who depend on their cars to get to doctor’s appointments, pick up prescriptions, buy groceries, or visit family, driving isn’t a luxury. It is a necessity. But when gas prices rise, something else has to give. A higher fuel bill can mean less money available for food, medicine, utilities, or other basic expenses.
That is why Congress needs to act. The Elder Relief Act would provide Americans aged 82 and older with an additional $85 per month, followed by a 4% annual increase.
That extra money could help seniors absorb the rising cost of gas and other necessities without having to choose between filling their tank and paying another important bill.
Our seniors worked, paid taxes, raised families, and helped build this country. They shouldn’t have to choose between getting where they need to go and making ends meet.
Congress should pass the Elder Relief Act and give older Americans the financial breathing room they deserve. Contact your representatives and tell them to support the Elder Relief Act.
