The 2027 COLA announcement confirms a 3.6% increase in Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) payments for approximately 76 million Americans. According to the Social Security Administration, the adjustment will add an average of $75 per month to retirement benefits beginning in January.
While any increase is welcome, the question remains: Is an extra $75 a month really enough to help seniors struggling with the rising cost of living?
For millions of older Americans living on fixed incomes, the answer may be no.
With high gas prices, expensive groceries, rising housing costs, and increasing medical expenses, an additional $75 can disappear almost immediately. A single trip to the grocery store or an unexpected prescription expense could consume much of that increase.
Many older Americans are already making difficult choices between purchasing medications, paying utility bills, and putting food on the table. For these individuals, even modest increases in everyday expenses can create serious financial hardships.
That’s why legislation like the Elder Relief Act is so important. The proposed legislation would provide additional financial assistance to Americans aged 82 and older, a population particularly vulnerable to rising expenses and limited retirement income.
Our nation’s oldest citizens have spent decades contributing to their families, communities, and country. They deserve financial security and the ability to enjoy their later years without constantly worrying about making ends meet.
Contact your representatives and urge them to support the Elder Relief Act. America’s seniors need meaningful, lasting financial relief.
