Aflac Reports Cybersecurity Incident that Could Impact Social Security, Offers Protection to Affected Individuals

According to a recent report from AP News, Aflac has confirmed a recent cybersecurity breach that may have exposed sensitive personal information, including Social Security numbers, health data, and claims details. The insurance giant described the breach as part of a broader cybercrime campaign targeting the industry.

The company acted quickly, halting the intrusion within hours and maintaining full operational capacity. “We continue to serve our customers as we respond to this incident,” Aflac said in a statement.

While the full scope of the breach is still under investigation, Aflac is offering 24 months of free credit monitoring, identity theft protection, and Medical Shield to potentially affected individuals who contact their call center.

The company has emphasized its commitment to transparency and security as it continues to assess the situation. Unfortunately, this is another potential blow to Social Security recipients who already have enough on their plates with benefits that don’t keep up with inflation, and the recent reports about SS running out of funding in the next few years.

To give many Americans a little more peace of mind, we think Congress needs to pass the Elder Relief Act. This legislation would provide greater financial security for retirees. Learn more here.
