or millions of older Americans, retirement is supposed to be a time to enjoy the rewards of a lifetime of hard work. Instead, many seniors are struggling to keep up with the rising cost of everyday necessities. Groceries, housing, healthcare, prescription medications, utilities, and transportation can all put tremendous pressure on a fixed income.
This is especially difficult for Americans over 82, many of whom have spent decades contributing to their communities and country. For these seniors, there may be little opportunity to increase their income when prices rise. Every additional expense can mean making difficult choices about what they can afford.
The Elder Relief Act would provide seniors over 82 with an additional $85 per month in Social Security benefits, followed by a 4% annual increase. The goal is to provide older Americans with greater financial stability as the cost of living continues to rise.
Passing the Elder Relief Act is about more than increasing a monthly benefit. It is about recognizing the sacrifices made by generations of Americans and helping ensure that seniors can afford the basic necessities of life.
Our oldest Americans should not have to choose between filling a prescription, buying groceries, paying the utility bill, or putting gas in the car. They deserve the opportunity to live their later years with greater dignity and financial security.
