As summer fades and colder weather approaches, many Americans look forward to the changing seasons. But for older adults living on fixed incomes, winter can bring another round of financial challenges.
Heating a home can become one of the biggest concerns when temperatures drop. Higher utility bills come at a time when seniors are already trying to balance the costs of groceries, healthcare, prescription medications, housing, and transportation. For someone relying primarily on Social Security, there may be little room in the budget for unexpected increases.
No one should have to choose between staying warm and paying for other basic necessities.
The Elder Relief Act could provide additional financial support for Americans over 82, including an additional $85 per month in Social Security benefits and a 4 percent annual increase thereafter. That extra support could help older Americans better manage the rising costs they face throughout the year.
As colder weather approaches, we should remember the seniors who helped build our communities and our country. Reach out to your members of Congress and urge them to support and pass the Elder Relief Act.
